Today:
Nestled in the fourth floor of the Viking Union, the Underground Coffeehouse is a favorite spot for coffee, community, and comfy couches. This hidden gem, that has been around for over thirty years, hosts free events for students and community members on weeknights, including specialty programs you can find on the Events tab. Boasting beautiful views and delicious coffee brews, this is a place you will never want to leave. |
History:
What is now the Underground Coffeehouse opened in 1969 as "Club 69," but changed to "Mama Sunday's Hotrod and Hamburger Haven" the following year as a joke based on the fact that none of the nouns applied to the function of the club. Eventually the length was dropped and it was called "Mama Sunday's." The title changed to the Underground Coffeehouse Series in 1994, but it had no official home. In 2003 the series found a permanent home in the Viking Union's third floor space as a coffeehouse/performance space to better serve the needs of students as identified by surveys and student initiatives |
